Conference of Sports Rehabilitation 16-17 March 2007

Athletes expose themselves to considerably greater loads than physically inactive persons and are thereby more prone to sustaining sports related injuries. This means that high demands are put on a fast and effective rehabilitation following a sports injury. The main goal with sports rehabilitation is to regain a good functional outcome that allows the athlete to return to pre-injury level of sports without any secondary effects. Unfortunately, it is not uncommon that athletes return to sports too quickly and too aggressively after an injury. This often results in a re-injury or a new injury.

Incomplete rehabilitation is generally suggested to be the reason for this, although scientific evidence is lacking. This means that the rehabilitation after a sports injury should not only strive for getting the injured athlete back to sports but rather to get him (or her) even more physically fit in order to prevent a re-injury or a new injury to occur. A correct diagnosis and judgment of the extent of the injury, a rapid and effective acute treatment as well as an optimal rehabilitation are therefore of great importance. A combination of exercises that improve range of motion, muscle strength, muscle flexibility, joint stability, proprioception, balance, coordination and conditioning should be included in the majority of sports rehabilitation programs irrespective of injury. The purpose is to maintain existing physical parameters and improve those that have been impaired due to injury.

Sports rehabilitation is an area within sports medicine of increasing interest.

The 1st European conference of sports rehabilitation is evidence based as far as possible and will include several different areas within sports rehabilitation. The faculty is the most experienced one in this field, and we hope that you will enjoy every part of the conference.
